Carbon dioxide and water are absorbed to synthesize carbohydrates such as sugars, hence the name photosynthesis, from the Greek φώτο- [photo-], "light," and σύνθεσις [synthesis], "putting together". As a waste product Oxygen is released. Plants have a variety of uses including culinary, medicinal, and in some cases spiritual usage.
